From the 2000s, tattooing advanced rapidly. Better inks, vibrant colors, and realistic designs emerged, led by the U.S. A few Singaporean artists adopted these new techniques, creating high-quality work for discerning clients.
By the mid-2000s, the internet fueled public interest. More people began appreciating fine tattoo art—and a new tattoo community was born.
But then disaster struck: from the late 2010s, untrained individuals flooded the scene. Many had no art background. Poorly executed tattoos became common. Today, roughly 1 in 5 tattoos seen on the street is badly done.
Why do people still get them? Low cost. Unlicensed “tattooists” charge rock-bottom prices, often working from home or in bulk. Many clients later regret it—and never return.
As a result, tattoo removal is booming. Even neighborhood clinics now offer laser removal. But risks are real: scarring, incomplete removal, and botched results are common.
